The Gap does most of the damage

If you live in Castle Rock and commute, you know the stretch of I-25 running south toward Monument as the Gap. It has been through years of major widening work, and the legacy of that is a corridor where concrete barriers sit close to the running lanes, shoulders are narrow and frequently gravelled, and there is nowhere for loose material to go except back under the traffic.

The combination is close to ideal for windshield damage: high speeds, minimal lateral separation between vehicles, and a steady supply of aggregate in the wheel tracks. It is the single most common source of the chips we fill in this town.

Exposed ground along the Divide sees strong and persistent wind, particularly in spring. In an area with this much active construction that means airborne grit and site debris are a routine part of the environment, not an occasional event.

Temperature swing

The daily temperature range at this elevation is wider than in the metro. A warm afternoon can be followed by a hard overnight freeze in the same twenty-four hours. That cycle is precisely what turns a small chip into a running crack, and it is why chips here should be dealt with quickly, not left for a convenient week.

Construction traffic

Castle Rock has been building steadily for years, and areas like the Meadows and Crystal Valley generate constant dump truck, concrete and materials movement on roads that are frequently unfinished. Anyone commuting past active development, or working on it, is exposed to far more airborne material than the traffic volume alone would suggest.
